Daycares in Idaho
Idaho scores licensed daycares through Idaho Steps to Quality, the state's quality rating program. Steps to Quality scores providers across six step levels (Step 1 to Step 6) using seven focus areas: business practices, health and safety, environments and curriculum, child development, family partnerships, the Pyramid Model for social-emotional development, and national accreditation.
Idaho's minimum legal requirements for licensed daycares are among the lightest in the country and fall below the standards published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the leading professional accreditation body for early- childhood programs and the most widely cited benchmark for high- quality care, on most measures. The state caps infant ratios at 1:6 (NAEYC: 1:4), toddler ratios at 1:6 (matching NAEYC), and preschool ratios at 1:12 (NAEYC: 1:10). Idaho does not regulate maximum group sizes at all (NAEYC recommends 8, 12, and 20 for infant, toddler, and preschool groups). Lead-teacher credentials and pre-service training hours are not set in state rule, and required ongoing professional development is 4 hours per year, well below NAEYC's recommended 25.
These minimum legal requirements apply to every licensed daycare in Idaho, regardless of its Steps to Quality rating. They are one of the Structural inputs in every Childery rating shown above. The rating distribution above combines that Structural input with Quality Achievers scores and other Process inputs to produce the Overall scores. For the full breakdown, see the Idaho methodology page.
