Daycares in Oklahoma

Oklahoma scores licensed daycares through Reaching for the Stars, the state's quality rating program. Reaching for the Stars scores providers across three star levels (One Star, Two Stars, Three Stars) using five categories: minimum licensing requirements, management and administration, workforce qualifications and professional development, learning and development, and program evaluation and continuous quality improvement.

Oklahoma's minimum legal requirements for adult-to-child ratios meet the standards published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the leading professional accreditation body for early-childhood programs and the most widely cited benchmark for high-quality care, at the infant and toddler age bands. The state caps infant ratios at 1:4 (matching NAEYC), toddler ratios at 1:6 (matching NAEYC), and preschool ratios at 1:15 (NAEYC: 1:10). Infant group sizes match NAEYC's recommended cap of 8, and toddler group sizes match NAEYC's recommended cap of 12; preschool groups are capped at 30 (above NAEYC's recommended 20). The state requires only a high school diploma for a lead teacher in a licensed center, where NAEYC's professional standard is a bachelor's degree. Pre-service training is not set in state rule, and required ongoing professional development is 12 hours per year, below NAEYC's recommended 25.

These minimum legal requirements apply to every licensed daycare in Oklahoma, regardless of its Reaching for the Stars rating. They are one of the Structural inputs in every Childery rating shown above. The rating distribution above combines that Structural input with Reaching for the Stars scores and other Process inputs to produce the Overall scores.
