Daycares in Florida
Florida scores licensed daycares through the Florida School Readiness and Voluntary Prekindergarten Program Assessment, the state's quality rating program. The rating program scores providers on a 1 to 5 level scale using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) across three domains: emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support.
Florida's minimum legal requirements are mixed when compared with the standards published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the leading professional accreditation body for early-childhood programs and the most widely cited benchmark for high-quality care. Florida's infant and toddler ratios match NAEYC's recommendations at 1:4 and 1:6, but the state does not regulate maximum group sizes at all, and the preschool ratio cap of 1:20 is twice NAEYC's recommended 1:10. The state does not set a single rule on lead-teacher credentials (requirements vary by provider type). Required pre-service training is 45 hours, well below NAEYC's recommended 2,080, and required ongoing professional development is 10 hours per year, below NAEYC's recommended 25.
These minimum legal requirements apply to every licensed daycare in Florida, regardless of its School Readiness Assessment rating. They are one of the Structural inputs in every Childery rating shown above. The rating distribution above combines that Structural input with the state assessment scores and other Process inputs to produce the Overall scores. For the full breakdown, see the Florida methodology page.
