Daycares in Michigan
Michigan scores licensed daycares through Great Start to Quality (GSQ), the state's quality rating program. Great Start to Quality scores providers on a 1 to 5 star scale across five categories: family and community partnerships, inclusive practices, curriculum and instructional learning environment, professional development, and staff qualifications.
Michigan's minimum legal requirements are mixed when compared with the standards published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the leading professional accreditation body for early-childhood programs and the most widely cited benchmark for high-quality care. Infant and toddler ratios meet or exceed NAEYC's recommendations: the state caps infant ratios at 1:4 (matching NAEYC) and toddler ratios at 1:4 (stricter than NAEYC's recommended 1:6). Preschool ratios and group sizes, however, fall below NAEYC's recommendations. Michigan allows a preschool ratio of 1:12 (NAEYC: 1:10), preschool groups of up to 40 children (NAEYC: 20), infant groups of up to 12 (NAEYC: 8), and toddler groups of up to 12 (matching NAEYC). Lead-teacher credentials and pre-service training hours are not set in state rule, and required ongoing professional development is 16 hours per year, below NAEYC's recommended 25.
These minimum legal requirements apply to every licensed daycare in Michigan, regardless of its Great Start to Quality rating. They are one of the Structural inputs in every Childery rating shown above. The rating distribution above combines that Structural input with Great Start to Quality scores and other Process inputs to produce the Overall scores. For the full breakdown, see the Michigan methodology page.
